Game of Thrones Characters I Hate For No Reason: First Edition

Hate is a pretty strong word, but we’re talking about fictional characters so I don’t feel particularly bad about slightly hyperbolizing any of this. I finally started watching this outrageous, character-packed program earlier this year, and while making my way through there were people I was supposed to hate, which I indeed hated (Joffrey, Littlefinger) as well as a few I was supposed to hate, but kinda loved (Cerci, Tywin). However, the most interesting group for me is that of the characters I should like but can’t really stand, without any real reason for my feelings. These characters are generally well liked, and play important roles throughout the series, but whenever they pop up during an episode I let out an internal sigh and try to bide my time before the next scene. I tried to put together explanations for some of the hate in my heart and was able to muster up something for two people that came to mind, I’ll probably do a second one of these with a few more characters once I go a bit deeper and do some rewatching.

So without further ado, here’s me trying to explain why I dislike a couple of Westerosians, when I don’t quite know why myself. If you’re the kind of person who digs super deep into the books or the ins and outs of these characters you’re definitely going to hate this, and I simply do not care. I’m talking about the TV show. I made it clear that I have no good reason for these particular opinions so if you tell me that my explanations suck I’ll care even less, because I know.

  1. Ser Davos Seaworth.

Putting this down first because from what I’ve seen around the interwebs this is quite the unpopular opinion, and I definitely get it. I’ve read the theories, I understand he’s important, maybe REALLY important, I promise I get it. He’s a guy that I absolutely should like; a former smuggler, world class sailor, and current owner of fantastic facial hair. He truly just doesn’t do it for me, I think he gets kinda blown up to be this top notch advisor who makes himself heard and sticks to his strong opinions but for me he just comes off as a big time d-rider who rarely gets his way and gets pushed around too much.

Don’t get me wrong, he’s an insightful dude who’s been responsible for getting some important stuff done (oh Jon Snow’s dead? Let’s maybe consult that witch lady who’s literally been yapping nonstop about king’s blood, what a tactician) (oh a 9 year old girl with troops? Let’s let the grand persuader work his magic, maybe she’ll give in and help). Regardless, he got bullied around by Stannis way too much (got his fingers chopped off for smuggling? it’s like the middle ages dude you can’t be taking that kind of shit for smuggling), and I spent about a season waiting for Davos to get Melisandre up out of there (hate her for a good reason) but really couldn’t sway Stannis at all. Real weak work. Couldn’t even convince Jon to have her killed. Sad! Now he’s just Jon Snow’s hype man who can steer a boat and point out the obvious when need be. There, I said it, the man is a glorified groupie.

Oh yeah and that whole thing with Stannis’ daughter was weird and pretty much all of those scenes sucked.

So yeah, I understand this is a pretty bad take, but it is what it is, the dude does very little for me. He had one pretty good speech this season (him stanning over Jon) but that’s pretty much it.

  1. Samwell Tarley

Tucking this one in comfortably after Davos because there’s absolutely no real reason for me to dislike this guy. His whole original stint as the goof of the night’s watch was cute and I enjoyed it;

HOWEVA I would’ve been much happier if his role more or less ended there and he just became some dude who hangs around the northside doing some nerd stuff here and there and getting /some sort of nice payout in the end because he’s boys with Jon. Didn’t really need him being the head spokesman for white walkers over the next few seasons. Was quite annoyed with him killing the walker as well I was so ready for him and Gilly to get devoured real quick. Oh yeah I also hate Gilly for no reason, glad she got phased out. But yeah, he was always a weird change of pace that really didn’t do it for me, and I was pissed every time I realized he was fully involved in another storyline. Now somehow he’s like the one and only dude in the citadel who gives a single shit about reading things??? The whole dragonglass thing was pretty weird, peeling off Jorah’s rocks was okay, and if he plays a big part in any of the remaining plot lines/or final walker stuff I’m gonna be quite upset (for no reason, may I remind you).
